Gender diversity in the mining industry - what needs to change?

These are the show notes for the podcast On Change, which explores change that works and the people who make it happen.

 Episode 05

In this episode I speak to my good friends and fellow Women in Mining South Africa (WiMSA) committee members Lindi Nakedi and Noleen Pauls.

Noleen Pauls has been working in the mining industry for over 20 years, principally in exploration in Africa and South America. She has also been involved in extensive multi-commodity mineral rights management. She has worked in government, industry and consulting.  She joined Reflex Africa last year as their principal geoscientist for the EMEA region. Along with a career in geology, her interest lies in the mentorship and development of young women entering the profession, enabling and equipping them to navigate this world professionally and personally. She is the past chairperson of Women in Mining South Africa.

Lindiwe Nakedi is the Director of Gubhani Exploration with an entrepreneurial drive and passion for optimizing business.  She is the co-founding member of highly successful and influential recruitment agency- The People Shop. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Industrial Psychology from the University of the Witwatersrand and completed the NMP from Wits Business School focused on Business Management. Lindi is the current chairperson for Women in Mining South Africa.

WIMSA creates an empowering network to inspire, support and develop the progression of women working in the mining industry through providing access to education, skills development, mentorship and representation. For more information on events, follow them on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

I mention an article in the Mining Weekly where women representation increases from ‘extreme minority’ to 13%-plus of SA’s mining workforce.

Noleen mentions a study done by WiMUK where the representation of women on boards in the mining industry is evaluated

During the Rapid Fire round Lindi mentions a book by Judy Dlamini. I followed up with her and the book is titled “Equal but different.” Noleen’s book she would recommend to anyone to read is The Drifters by James A. Michener.

Lindi recommends the app Duolingo for learning a new language, and Noleen introduced me to the fun app Bitmoji, with which you can create your own personal emoji.

Lindi mentions Monica Ospina from O Trade as a past speaker at a Women in Mining conference held in South Africa.
